Wheel and Axle
Description: The wheel and axle would not work without each other. A wheel and axle is a simple machine with a rod or axle through the center lift. If you turn a large wheel fixed to an axle the axle will turn too.
Operation: The wheel and axle work when the wheel and axle are attached to each other and the wheel rotates.
First Use: Wheels weren't used until about 3500 BC. It was used around the time when people first lived in cities. The first use was probably pottery wheels. Then people in Central Asia started to make wagon wheels. Only one spot of the wheel touched the ground so that there was less friction and it would be less work to push if necessary.
Three examples of a Modern day Wheel and Axle:Three examples of a modern day wheel and axle is a bicycle wheel, car wheel, or a doorknob because they all need and have a wheel and axle. The fulcrum supports the wheel and axle.
How It makes work easier: The bigger the wheel the more it will increase the distance over which the wheel works there by decreasing the force. Also the wheel and axle can help with transportation because instead of us lifting something heavy we can put the heavy load on a set of wheels so we can transport the load faster.
History of Wheel and Axle: The wheel and axle came together in 3500 B.C. and the earliest wheels were probably pottery wheels. Around 3700 B.C. people from Central Asia started making wagon wheels. Then after that people started to make solid wheels.
